Being a fan of anime music videos for a while now, I decided I might give in and see how good I could make one. Having nearly every Inu Yasha DVD, I figured that would be the easiest to start with and give me more control over the quality (which is a little damaged in the preview as a result of severe compression - it is full screen DVD quality and nearly a gig on my hard drive - and since I'm just learning I haven't a clue how to properly encode).

I soon realized that Windows Movie Maker, the only video editing software I had, would not allow me to produce some of the fancier effects I had come to love in other videos, so instead I attempted to make a good part of the song lip synched. Shortly after I then learned that WMM didn't like doing that either, but I still wanted to try (far from perfect, but still not bad - especially for a first try).

The song itself is "White Houses" by Vanessa Carlton. Not sure exactly how old it is, but I just heard it for the first time last Sunday and it seemed a perfect match.

I've been paying for 40Gb of monthly transfer for a while now, and I've never come close to even passing 1% of that. Give 'er hell ^_^

(not 100% sure, but I think you might need at least Windows Media 9 audio and video codecs). Also, since it is my first, opinions are most definately welcome.

Anyone else here do any work on AMVs, or care to discuss anything related to them?

Edit:
I just saw my scores on animemusicvideos.org (the video there is a bit different, the one I am hosting and posting above has more scenes/clips, transistions, and better timed synching). So far I have*

Orig = 9.25
Visual = 8.5
Sound = 10
Synch = 8.25
Lip = 7.75
Effort = 9.75
Re-View = 8.5
Overall = 8.75

*Not including someone who gave me all ones because they lacked the codec

Pretty good. I've seen some very humorous(sp?) ones in the past and those are always good, but this is way more than I could do. I have no knowledge at all about video editing. So, great job! :D

well, i'm not too familar with AMVs ( or Inu Yasha for that matter, though it looks good ) but i was quite impressed with your efforts. especially considering the program you used. the editing and timing are pretty good. it's a nice song too ^_^

I like AMV's and I frequent animemusicvideos.org I'm not going to check out your AMV tonight though because it is late and my family don't appreciate me making noise at 2:43am... god only knows why. I will however be checking it out in the morning.
I've had trouble finding nice clean anime to use in my AMV's and I was wondering what program you used to get the animes onto your computer.
I think I'll head to my amv.org acount in the morning to, and see if I have any comments. lol I only have a few online since I haven't got an FTP I know how to use... yes I'm dumb.

I've had trouble finding nice clean anime to use in my AMV's and I was wondering what program you used to get the animes onto your computer.
I used DVD Decryptor to get the vob files decrypted and on my hard disk. From there I used DVD2AVI, AVISynth 2.5, and MPEG2Dec3.dll + Decomb521.dll for plugins, notepad, DivX 4 player for its codecs, a codec called Huffyuv v2.1.1, and VirtualDub.

Its a rather lengthy process and takes a long time (especially for my P4 3.4 Ghz EE beast). To give you an idea, by the end you'll be using notepad to alter the interlacing of the clips.

I'd recommend logging on to animemusicvideos and reading their "working with dvds" guide as it explains everything step by step and in detail (which comes in handy since you are going to have to find out various things about interlacing).

Also, be sure to have LOTS of room on your Hard Drive. An 8 second clip will probably end up being bigger than 400Mb (and chances are, you'll be using lots of clips). Of course, you'll end up with a super high quality video (until you run it through several encoders like me).

Like I said, I do have the movie hosted there as well, but the one I linked to is an improved version so I would recommend downloading it directly from my site instead.

By the way, what is your member name?

my members name is andfries and my AMV's suck lol... I have two locally hosted and both have annoying fansubs on them I think. I tried to get bits without subbing but it's difficult especially when lip syncing. I have done a load of AMV's since the two FMP:fumofu that are on there. Anime I've used are Trigun, Gundam Seed, FMP, FMP:fumofu, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and I'm wanting to use my Chobits series because I've not seen many good Chobits AMV's and I think I could do one ^^ I'll head on to AMV.org for the working with DVD's thingy you mentioned... I would probably have known about them if I didn't spend all my time here. Hehe.
Thanx for the info ^^

btw that's a real nice AMV ^^ my only problen is the bath scene is too long and seems kind of out of place... I usually get bored towards teh end of making an AMV and I usually just rush to get finished so I wouldn't complain if it was at the end but the bath scene seems to be more towards teh middle. Not too much of a problem though. Nice work.
