Watching Speed Racer in the mornings years ago was when I found out about anime and what it was since it obviously didn't look like a typical western cartoon.
DBZ was the first hardcore anime I came to watch and came to realize the whole world of anime and what seperated it from western cartoons.

I first experienced anime when I was about 4 years old, and my older sister showed me Sailor Moon :squint: . My thought back then would be, 'I like the way that show looks', and I got into the actual animation when I was about 7 or 8 years old, when I could be able to understand it more.
I first understood anime by how facial features were made when I tried to draw Goku (LOL), and it was suprisingly good, I drew him about 20 times till I got into other titles.
Now I plan to major in some kind of animation once I'm older.

Just recently saw Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust and it was pretty damn good. The great thing about it is that is isn't your typical "half vampire and half human" story.

That is EXACTLY what my first anime was. Vampire Hunter D on Saturday Anime on the Sci-Fi channel. Heh.
Actually, in general, Saturday Anime was what got me started, because I watched Vampire Hunter D, then the next week was Tenchi Muyo in Love, then Iria: Zeiram The Animation, then 8 Man After... I owe a lot to Saturday Anime.

I watched kimba the white lion, speed racer, robotech and astroboy as a child.
However, the biggest one for me was Technoman. Too bad it's extremely hard to find the english version. The japanese version has a completely different mood. :(

I first learned of anime in about 1995 though I'd been watching it for quite some time... I first noticed anime as being different when me and a friend would stay up late to watch cyber city and fist of the north star on late night channel 4... those where the days.

i've been concious of Japanese cartoons having a certain style - which i liked - since i was quite young, probably about seven or eight. around that time i think i saw an anime one saturday morning, featuring a wee boy and a wee girl and an airship or something... it's kind of fuzzy, it was a long time ago ^_^
i was then concious of adverts for Manga ( the company, not the comics ) and i linked the two. one friday night i happened upon Fist of the North Star on C4, same as 5te mentioned.
the week before i finished school before christmas 2000, i was sitting in physics drawing cartoon doodles. i drew, quite by accident, a semi-manga-style chick in baggy clothes. on the 1st of January 2001 i searched for 'draw manga' or something, and i got Polykarbon.com in the results. i read the site and discovered that the cartoons were called 'anime'. so i suppose i've really known what anime was since 2001.
still can't draw properly though...

I don't really like anime so much as I like the stories. I mean, if I like an anime I don't like it BECAUSE it's anime, I like it because it's a well-told story. Personally, I prefer Marvel and DC over the manga style. Manga was the Japanese trying to copy Disney animation.
Steasaurus

ORIGINALLY it was the japanese trying to copy disney(astroboy manga actually has a mickey mouse clone in it)... but they've evolved their style since then and are on a completely different level to disney.
The fact that disney got the licences for some of ghibli animes shows that they're different otherwise disney wouldn't bother would they? they already have plenty of stuff under their belt.
However not all anime have good stories but like Kibouchi prefers Marvel and DC style everyone has there own preference and I'm glad that I like the style of the animation and stuff.

The original Pioner dub of Akira I think it was from Streamline.
Robotech's wasn't great either.
Dragon Ball Z has had some pretty bad dubbing, especially some of its movies.
Comic Party. Some of female voices were literally ear piercingly loud I wanted to kill myself the moment I heard them. I followed by a quick change of the channel.
Duel Masters. Saw the first episode and never wanted to see it again because of cheap voice acting.
Wait... I think we have a winner... POKEMON! haha
I saw one of the previews for its newest movie and man, it sounded like the main character was choking on a frog or something. Also, come on? Pokemon voices? I think that's gotta be why it sucks so much.

01-12-2005, 02:38 PM
I dont know, Pokemon and Sonic are sort of a tie to me. I think the sonic animation is Japanese...
Well at least the Sonic games, they have the worst voice acting I have ever heard in a game.
Hiltz
01-12-2005, 02:43 PM
If you mean Sonic X then I do tend to agree with ya on that. Talk about over the top american voice acting lol. I always liked Doctor Robotnick's voice but that's my only exception.
I don't even remember hearing any character voices in any of the Sonic games which is probably because I never owned a Sega Genesis or got too familair with any of the sonic games.

Weiss Kreiz or something IMO had the worst dub ever but most anime has bad dubbing so you should all just watch anime in japanese with subtitles if you need them. I think a lot of anime loses some of it's "stuff" once translated... especially since dubbing isn't always accurate in it's translation. You can lose a lot of humor or even plot because english dubs have the script altered in order to get better lip sync and sometimes even to cencor the content. The japanese version of sailor moon had lesbians and when it was translated for american TV someone decided that lesbians were inapropriate for childrens TV and the script was altered to make out they were in fact just really close cousins... which is erm... creepy.
But hasn't this thread gone of topic and headed to the different topic of bad dubbing? We've yet to hear many peoples first encounters and understanding of anime.

i never really noticed that anime had its own type until i spent a lot of my time on the internet. i was about 10 i think.
the worst dubbing i've seen would have to be duel masters.
Vava2109
01-12-2005, 08:12 PM
Lol i still think the megaman network was on the top . . . but duel masters, never thought about that one . . . sometimes the people who do it in japanese have much better voices than the american ones, if theyd do it in english with the same ones who did it in Japanese . . . tis would be the greatest . . .but theres supposted to be at least one thing wrong with each one, even if its a character whos male who looks female.
i think i was about 5-9 when i started watching it
then around the age of 11 i started drawing, reading manga, and dabbing in japanese culture

A good deal of years ago, one of my friends lended me some VHS tapes with Ninja Scrool and Ghost in the shell.
And when I saw that stonegiant Tassai first mow down a squad of ninjas with his double edged bommerang weapon and cut down half a forrest, captured a female ninja and then started raping her I was like "HOLY SH**!!"
And then I was hooked. Got even better when another of my friends showed me some anime he had downloaded called Trigun :D
Way back in the day, when I was forced to be Pidge from Voltron! Grrr.... anyways, I didn't know it was anime at the time, so to be fair would be when I was 10 or 11 watching Ranma 1/2 and tenchi OVAs with my friend. And reading my other friend's Akira manga. As far as voices go, I used to be an english only guy... but that is cuz most VHS I rented were all dubbed. Since DVDs have a choice, I am soley sticking to japanese voices. It smokes the pants off of english. Considering the japanese actually put emotion into their lines, unlike monotoned English dubs. I have to admit I had to watch Excel Saga on English, they talked way too damn fast and the subtitles shot across the screen to quick!
Hiltz
01-18-2005, 01:27 PM
Yeah!
Yeah, Tessia was one really great villain and had such a nasty death too!
Trigun was great because it showed that the main character doesn't have to be the typical stereotype of what we usually label them to be as.
I really don't like to listen to the japanese voice since it involves reading the subtitles which gets a bit distracting when trying to catch everything in the animation sequences but that's just my pick.
I was watching Ghost in the Shell movie the other day and man! Whoever did the english voice for Matoko Kusinagi wasn't very good in my opinion. The english version of Matoko Kusinagi in Stand Alone Complex was much better and so are all of the other english voice casts of the main characters.

Hhehe, same with me.
There were a quite a few awkward moments in Ninja Scroll. :unibrow:
- Tessai "almost" rape scene
- Jubei take me now! (close to the Shijima fight I think)
- Shijima's nasty techinque.. gross! :eek2:
- Chamberlain's sex scene accompanied by some unpleasant sex screams
- Bennisato sitting naked on the rocks (first encounter with Jubei)
- Bennisato in the shrine
And what about Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?
Is it me or can no one get used to watching the major wearing such a revealing outfit with her prosthetic ass hanging out?

haha, i think they joked about it a few time.
But I just found it unflattering and distracting.
Another bad dub and lack of fashion common sense would have to be Fatal Fury.

i think the worst dub i can think of right now is the original record of lodoss ova. Honestly, it's not much better in japanese. The voices are better, but the dialogue is just as bad.

someone mentioned excel subs and dubs and that is one of the shows I was talking about when I said sometimes they change the lines... I saw the fan-subbed version before it was availible to buy and now I can watch the dubbed version.
When Excel first encounters the Puchus she says "aw soo cute... BUT WHAT THE HELL IS IT!!!??" before whacking it on the fan sub but on the dub she says "aw soo cute... BUT I HAVE NO TIME FOR THIS NOW!!!!" and whacks it. I found the sub more amusing. But maybe it was miss translated by the subber and the dubber got it right? either way it show that lines can be changed... I dissaprove.

watching the original dragonball z episodes on tv on sunday mornings was my first encouter with anime. then it just went off the air. i eventually moved and we got cartoon network at my new house and thats whn i came to know the legend known as ROBOTECH. to this day DBZ and Robotech are my favorites. i didnt really understand what anime was untill i went on a camping trip with boyscouts and this older boy there was talking about DBZ which i hadnt seen since it was on sunday mornings and i made him tell me all he knew the entire trip. when i got home i went on the internet and look it up and that was when i learned what anime was. that was also coincidentaly when i got into computers.

I really got into DBZ in the 8th grade when Toonami really got well known for its block of various animated shows. The raditz saga must have been played over 3 times and the Frieza saga must have been played over , man that alone took like a month or so to finish and that didn't happen until I was in like 11th or 12th grade haha. DBZ is truly the king of reruns.

The first anime I recall watching was Robot Carnival when I was 11 years old on the Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime (which just happened to show Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Project Lily CAT, Appleseed, 8-man After, and New Dominion Tank Police over the coming weeks so they gave me something to do for the start of that summer). Heh from there I only started to college around the time Technoman ended on UPN, of which my first was 8-man After (first one given to me) and Akira (first I bought with my own cash). :)

Thank you Spyder!
Is Project Lily Cat the one with the colonists being rampaged by some wierd tentacle monster that pretty much absorbed the crew and destroyed the ship?
Also on Saturday Anime, do you recall the name of an anime that featured the main characters on the high seas? Thats all i can give, honest.
I was so pissed when sci fi got rid of Saturday Anime, was i the only one?

The first anime i ever saw was when i was about 3 years old. I remember going in to my parents room and my dad showed me the video case of akira, he tried to tell me the story behind it but i couldn't understand and so i thought it was about some guy who gets trapped in some rubble?! and then i remember vaguely(sp?) a few muinutes of another anime he showed me on this small white tv. There was this woman being chased by a large bear in a graveyard, so she took this bulley that she had around her neck and used it to shoot the bear in the head, thats all i remember.
I did take any notice of anime untill about 7 years ago when one of my friends had akira on video and i watched it and thought HOLY SHIT THIS IS COOL. and bingo, here i am.

I didn't find out what anime was until I was about 12 or 13, some girl I knew started drawing nothing but DBZ characters, and some guy at school would talk about Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo alot. I had already been watching them (not DBZ), I just didn't know they had their own genre. After toonami stopped showing both shows, I dind't really pay much attention to anime until I started watching TRIGUN and Big O an adult swim.
