View Full Version : "Ol' Samurai" (last update September 14, 2005)

Yup, I've got it as a webcomic now... plus I'm actually updating and everything! Wow! Anyways, I think I've finally found a set routine for creating the comic (you know, panels...text...character designs... storyline...etc) and am currently on chapter 1 page 17. So, check it out on your spare time and leave me those good ol' comments and votes http://forums.megatokyo.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif Oh yeah, and I'll try to update every week. If I don't, its because of schooling; grades, tests, dealing with my junior year...its teachers...its standardized tests... yeah.. Well, hope you all will enjoy it more than I did creating it (which can be a lot or a little depending on just how much I liked creating each page).

Edit: Heh, I should probably say a little about the story... umm... Its about a 18 year old named Jake who inherits the title of the "Ol' Samurai" (which is the title) who had fought against corruption and evil during his time. That title has been passed down to one person every generation (but who keeps track of that anyways?). Of course, as it went further and further from the first "Ol' Samurai", peace had slowly been fading as more and more corruption was taking place again until it had finally exploded in Jake's time... well... at least during the time he recieves the title... go figure. Expect to see awesome fight scenes, developing story, and a good amount of random funny events (the good ol' rock-out-of-nowhere-to-the-face scenes, exploding pinballs, and rubber chickens that shoot out death trukeys!!!...yeah...turkeys!).

A few other cool webcomics to check out if you want:
http://www.noneedforbushido.com/ (http://www.noneedforbushido.com/) <--- Great online webcomic, really funny, and ongoing storyline, and great cliches heh. Its pretty deep into the story currently I think, like in the hundred of pages.
http://www.drunkduck.com/Assassin_Assassin/ (http://www.drunkduck.com/Assassin_Assassin/) <--- Personally, I like the bad guys, mainly Chain Death
http://www.drunkduck.com/I_Come_From_Mars (http://www.drunkduck.com/I_Come_From_Mars) <--- this one is beautifully done with great pencil work and awesome story; very funny.

you shoul place this in the comics section and update it there. Even if you only have one page up you still should put it there.

*edit* after reading it..the first thing I realized is you need a better font. Try downloading some free ones of the web. Also you need text bubbles. In some parts the text blands with the background and it becomes a pain. I like the story, the rendering/the drawong itself was great. But what is up with the face less samurai. And I dont really think Ol' Samurai fits but hey your choice. Hope that helped *end edit*

I'll see if I can make the text so that it itself has like a black glow to it and white text or something. About the faceless Samurai, I tried to make it seem like the sunlight wasn't hitting that part of the face because of his straw hat, concealing his identity for that one frame. And for the "Ol' Samurai", that'll be explained later in the comic. And thanks, it did help, I'll try to keep all that in mind when I make the next pages

If his face was supposed to be in shadowyou should have shaded it. I thought it was that but you did not place any darkness at all so that is why he looks faceless. Oh, and on the last page..in the bottom panels I was a little confuse with the panels...but then again I might be just dumb. Keep working on it!

04-08-2005, 06:41 AM
Yeah, heh, I never really added the shading to it. But how come you were confused about the bottom panels?

I've updated it to page 10 now, check it out

04-16-2005, 10:57 PM
the panels and stuff confused me..I dunno i guess i am jst dumb. I did not know what panel led to what panel. You changed the text..good. It is much easier to the eye now. I guess I have no crits for now..

04-27-2005, 10:24 AM
vincent316: Well, about the panels and stuff, I set of the text so that it leads the viewer's eye in the direction of the next frame...most of the time... When it doesnt do that, I just hope the reader reads it the regular way, left to right, top to bottom, or the ones that overlap first then the next ones.

On a general note: I've updated the comic to page 12

04-29-2005, 11:45 PM
ok, dont worry about the confusion thing. I will be keeping up with this comic for sure

05-09-2005, 10:05 PM
Alright, to give an update. I've updated the comic to page 13.

Aaah...back from a woonderful vacation. I see you have been getting yourself busy. Right now without the bubbles it is a little hard to tell if he is saying it out loud. But i think I am right when I say his thoughts are like light and have no outline...right? You have really captured the wway a human acts normally. I just love that :D. wHAT WAS UP WITH THAT SUDDEN Demon thing though? Whatever the reason(That is the comp right, or no?) I did not really like the speech in that one but...its all good. I am not quite sure but something is buggin me bout Rachel...dont know what though. I will have to get back to you on that. The whole thing is great and...well again I loved how u captured the human essence. It seems so normal. Oh and on a final note..Rachel does not seem to be wet...even after drying herself should not there be like a drop of water trickling down...something? Nice pages as always. Keep it up dude

06-01-2005, 10:09 AM
Wow great work man,I seen that you have talent dude, keep up the good work

06-10-2005, 08:30 AM
vincent316: Thanks a bunch, and about the demon thing, lol I made it as a filler page. If you go back to that page and look at the title of the website (the VERY top of the browser) it should saying "Filler 1 Page 1" or something like that. And I'm starting to just stick with bubbles now, I find it easier to do anyways; and yeah, you're right, the lighter text is what he's thinking in those couple of pages. And about the human essence part, thanks a bunch again, I tried to make it seem like how life is everday for some people, but of course once he enters the tourney, its not going to be "everday" much anymore.

shushini: Thanks, I'll definately keep it up, and hopefully go pro... *shrug* just gotta give it a few years... and a lot of advertisment

Edit: P.S.- forgot to mention that I've updated it to page 15 about 2 days ago (June 8, 2005). So, go check it out and enjoy!

06-11-2005, 02:52 PM
Forget something yet again, if anyone would like me to use one of their characters for a small frame in my comic, just ask. I'll save me the trouble of coming up with random background characters for the next page (Page 16). Soooo, if anyone would like me to, just post a pic of your character and a brief description of their personality. (and Warning: if you don't ask me to stick with the original style the character was drawn in, I'll just draw the character in my own way).

Oh btw all crits I have were placed in the comments part.
