And I thought the anime series kicked ass, it looks like a sequel to it.

It is. After watching all the episodes it has become my favorite anime of all time. And the movie is after the last episode.

Makes perfect sense.
It was certainly an enjoyable series and it's great that they didn't want to leave us hanging with so many unanswered questions without the production of this movie.
So is it going to go straight to dvd or will it be an actual movie theater release?

isn't fma licenced now? won't the mods kick your ass for suggesting filesharing? if it hasn't been licenced yet then by all means sign me up :P

Yes, the FMA series is licensed but this is just a trailer for the upcoming new movie that I assume isn't yet licensced seeing that it is for Japan unless I'm mistaken. However, the movie is a sequel to the conclusion of the FMA series and so it contains some spoliers like what was already mentioned.

*LAST WARNING******************************************
This is the movie's summarized plot.
Munich, Germany, 1923. Two years have passed since Edward Elric was dragged from his own world to ours, leaving behind his country, his friends and his younger brother, Alphonse. Stripped of his alchemical powers, he has been all this time researching rocketry together with Alphonse Heiderich, a young man with a lot of resemblances to his own brother, hoping to one day find a way back home. His efforts so far had proven fruitless, but when he hears that the Thule Society, an occultistic group strongly tied to the Nazi Party, discovered what could be a clue to the location of the legendary, mystical place called "Shambala", Edward's hopes get renewed. Meanwhile, in his own world, Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search for a way to bring his older brother back.
