How do you survive survival horrors?
By rationing ammo and health.
Or just being a good runner.

um...not dying?

by stepping up to a chain saw wielding zombie, alien, or dino, and assuming the positon
or you can avoid all fights and take cues that they give you. Being slow in new areas help too

The best thing to do is this, save your game, then just continue with the game, preferably with a meaty weapon equipped, ready for anything. Find out exactly what you have to do, where the next opportunity to save is, then simply reload and do the section as best you can. Then, you won't be surprised by anything.
I'm playing Fatal Frame 2 at the mo. It's bloody scary, and the only meaty weapon you got is a camera! ARGH!
That's a lame and boring way to play.
LAME AND BORING!
Not knowing what's around the corner is the best part of survival horror games.

I usually shoot the shit out of everything, run out of ammo, die, throw a fit, do the same, not learn my lesson, throw the controller at the t.v... then lie to all my friends about beating it.
Yeah, that's about it.

I agree with Yeef here. A monster bursting through a window is cool the first time, but on the sixth, it is lame.

WTF? Um, Yeef, I think you're blowing what I said out of proportion, I don't mean crawl through a game at a snail's pace. Surely you must have gotten a shock by some zombie dog/bird/shark/person whatever, wasted ammo, took loads of damage, and then thought," I could'a done that better".
Don't deny it, I've been watching you...

best way to play a horror is to blow the living shit out of every thing dont be scared and to run strait to the end
Surely you must have gotten a shock by some zombie dog/bird/shark/person whatever, wasted ammo, took loads of damage, and then thought," I could'a done that better".Nope. I hate that style of playing. In fact, I've always reprimanded my friend for doing that since he does that with all games, including RPGs.
The fun playing a game the first time through is overcoming the problems that come at you, even if you create them yourself. If I were in a situation where I was low on health and ammo I'd do my best to survive and if I die, so be it. The most intense and enjoyable moments of gaming come when you're thinking "holy shit, I'm gonna die!" then you do something amazing and pull though.

Whatever floats your boat, Yeef, but you've got a good point. Different people have different styles of play and get different experiences from games. You like facing the consequences of your actions, while I like correcting mistakes so as I don't make them again.

I never use 'proper' cheats 'til I'm finished the game though, and I still don't think of it as cheating when I try harder to achieve something.
It's not cheating so much as it is cowardice.

I like to take my time and avoid mistakes, experiment here and there. Do a little research, dig up some good cheats or just some plain old walkthroughs. 99% of the time I'll use walkthroughs and my own prior knowledge before using cheats.

u dont gotta explian cheatin in games especialy servival horror its all justified depending on what you cheated on what unlimit ammo or a gun you couldnt get at first as long as you dont put it on god mode ur ok and yes it is type coiwerdess but resident or games that just horrible at the controls you have no other choice
resident or games that just horrible at the controls you have no other choiceEh? I've done everything in every [main] RE game without using any cheats or walkthroughs. Resident Evil games are extremely easy (well, except invisible zombie mode in REmake).

Sometimes it feels like trying to steer a boat, but it doesn't take long to get used to them. I dunno why they didn't introduce proper 3d controls, some people claim it adds to the claustrophobic feel, but I really don't know.

How do you survive survival horrors?
Enter the cheatcode and blast the shit out of everything while laughing like a maniac.
Either that or rush all over the place while laughing like a maniac.
I dunno, never really liked the survival horror genre, so I don't take the games too seriously. Which is usually why they kick my ass after I run through sections and end up being trailed by 10+ zombies/demons/pedophiles/monsters of the day.
I dunno why they didn't introduce proper 3d controlsRE2 for N64 as well as RE Outbreak 1 and 2 had the option to use 'traditional' 3D controls and makes the game a lot worse. Mainly because it makes it extremely easy and the games are pretty easy to begin with.

I liked the controls of the REmake the most.
mercenary
06-27-2005, 02:22 PM
I think companies purposely program the controls to be tricky and frustrating. ResidentEvil gave me headache the first time around with its controls.
Alucard1515
06-27-2005, 03:52 PM
It doesn't bother me, and considering how abruptly the camera angles change sometimes, it'd make it really annoying to control.
The thing I don't get is why people praised RE4s controls so much when they're almost identical to every other RE game. The only difference was the camera placement.
It's because they're morons.
The only significant difference in the control scheme is that aiming is analog instead of just "up, down, forward". Everything else is identical.

Nemises jumping throuigh the window in Resi 3 scared the bejaysus out of me, then I realised how ridiculous he looked with a rocket launcher.
Oh yeah, just after that section, when I ran into a different room, thought I was safe, then realised he could run through doors! AGHHH!
In REmake, when I got to the chain-girl's room, it was so fcukin' creepy, I expected her to attack me or something, but she didn't. I nervous as hell though.

The first time I fought a crimson head, but it sure was fun to blow him away with a shotgun, along with his head.
Lisa, had me spooked, what distrubed me was I couldn't figure what she looked like. All I saw was a bunch of mixed and massed up faces all over her.

the killer babies of doom in the first silent hill. back when I first played that game it made me nervous, but in a good way. I'd wait until late, turn of all the lights and run from evil doll demons and zombie nurses.
that part where you have to shoot the giant lizzard in the mouth before it can swallow you whole was pretty tense the first time around. now it's just too easy.
the controls in survival horror games are great. since you can't change the camera angles yourself you need them to be like that or you'd have to get your bearings every time the angle changed.

I take head shots or use speed to trip the enemy up.
BOOOOOOOM HEADSHOT!
I tend to just try my best the first time, if I die at a point, I memorize what happened and figure out what I did wrong or what I can do to get past that level through careful plannin'.
But most of the time I just run in and expect everything to attack me and shoot like hell at everything that comes near me. Which apparently ends up with me NOT being killed!
