The most popular Survival horror games are "Sci Fi" and " Occult " based, the current bestselling sci fi survivial horror is the Resident Evil (Biohazard) series, while the biggest occult title is currently Silent Hill.

While science fiction has some forms of plausible sigths the occult versions usally arent very realistic on how the game works, basically anything goes and anyone can be a monster.

For me in general it has to be the occult survival horrors that scare me the most thou, the first game in the catagory was Clock Tower the first fear (( snes title )) as far as I know, I migth be wrong, and even that creeped me out seeverly when i first played it. DAMN YOU SCISSOR MAN !

I remember playing resident evil the first time too, I got severly scared. But all the fear vanished when I discoverd that the monsters were caused by a human created virus. While in silent hill id be scared throuh the entire thing becouse, well to but it bluntly THERE IS NO LOGIC TO WERE THE MONSTER IS GONNA SHOW UP FROM !! The fear of knowing things will sometimes just creep to throuh the nearby wall really made me jumpy.

So My vote would be occult settings for optimal fear effect.

Resedent Evil 4 was sort of Occult and Sci-Fi, if that's how you're going to classify it.

Ive always thought that Silent Hill were scariest by far. Ive had to turn my playstation off because they got a little too creepy for me. Even though they are scarier I always perferred to play Resident Evil games.

Games aren't really all that scary in my opinion. As far as atmospheric qualities go, I like RE1 best, but Silent Hill games more than the other RE games.

I didn't like the SH game I played.

As far as Sci-fi or Occult, I could care less. If done right either one could be scarry enough. If they can think of a cool scientific reason why the dead are walking around, I'll accept it. And if they just want to say "hell was full", I'll accept that too.

I consider Quake survival horror when on hard mode, that game is terrifying.

Nothing really scares me, but I end up scaring other people.
Doom 3 was a dissappointment. Sister got it for me on my 16th birthday. Played it for about two hours, got stuck, got bored, shot people instead.
Silent hill was good. Especially 3. You can't see where the hell you're going! And Silent Hill 4 has all those two headed baby arm walker things in cloaks! >:,

If anybody wants to know, those that remember my first picture posts on Polykarbon, I found a game which has apparently got mutated zombie dinosaurs! Dinocrisis 3. Which is a very weird lookin' game for the X box.

I like the resident evil series the best, 4 and 1 being my faveourites, as both are scary in different ways. The first is scary because of the Claustrophobic enviroments, and the camera angles which reveal the area, but not enough for you to feel entirely safe. The fourth was scary because you've got a crowd of people who want to impale you chasing you round and you've only got ten shots left...

Clock tower, altough not my faveourite, was damn scary, even for a SNES game, I was scared sh*tless when Scissorboy came down throught the glass, so much so, that i turned my SNES off and put the game in the box. The fact I played it on a rainy halloween night didn't help either...

Silent Hill was about 100 times more fantastic then any RE game I have played.

I love Silent Hill, but I've always been a much bigger fan of Resident Evil. Silent Hill is a LOT freakier and the atmosphere is just insane... literally. As far as gameplay, I enjoy Resident Evil more, and there's just something about the series that is more appealing to me.

I never got scared by any of the resident evils, I had a hard time getting into any of them (havent had the chance to try resident evil 4 yet) So considering ive only played maybe a couple levels of each its not really fair to judge.

For me the best atmospheric scary games ive played are doom3 and alien versus predator.

AvP playing as the marine...oh my god it was painfully scary to me sometimes. The original game is so dark and you have flares and night vision to light your way but it still doesnt help much at times. Aliens could come from anywhere, literally you where never safe wherever you where at. Not to mention those damn facehuggers...oh my god they would make this screaming noise that made me fall out of my seat at least twice if memory serves correctly. The game just oozed with the proper atmosphere for its time, sadly the sequal while awesome lost alot of the atmosphere of its predecessor but was still a good solid avp game.

Doom 3: What can I say? The graphics engine was superbly executed for the gameplay ideas they had in mind. Although it was old school jump out from nowhere scares it still gets me. Playing this game on nightmare is how its meant to be played. It truly is terrifying knowing something is going to leap from the darkness to kill you and that it can and very quickly I might add. The creature designs and especially the level design just create this immersive atmosphere that just suck you right in. Most importantly is the audio in doom3 holy crap is it awesome, most tend to notice the insane amounts of detail of ambient sound. The whispers echoing through the air, the machinery that take on the faint sound akin to the demons that they conceal. Or hearing the footsteps of a zombie commando running down the hall about to deilver a massive blow right to your grill...aaaaahhhhh good times my friends, good times.

I found that Resident Evil quickly degenerated into running around to about a bajillion different rooms trying to find a blue key or something while being ambushed by monsters.

It was a little too Doomesque for me.

Yeah, some of the puzzles were really retarded (play part 3, where they went insane with nonsensical puzzles), but so are the ones in Silent Hill. They can kind of play it off, since the whole game is set in a freakish, otherworldly location, but they're still pretty random. And the puzzles in RE don't piss me off nearly as much as the one's in SH.

Anyway, I like them both, but I'd have to give the slight nod to RE.

RE seemed to have more puzzles, and less stuff that wasn't puzzles.
Like say . . . a plot.

RE had plenty of plot; it was just all told through the files rather than cut scenes.

Which is slightly more realistic.

The creator of resident evil said in an interview that he would love to alter alot of the first games in the series to make the story less plothole full, but its hard to do that and keep the B movie feel wich most people love about the series.
