I like the face on the right more.
Played the demo yesterday. Was short, but seemed pretty interesting (especially the bit where you had to run off the wall, turn, and jump onto a catwalk/platform). |

The one on the right is more attractive but the real character has a more man-like jaw to psychologically help the guys who can't deal with playing a girl character. It all happens subconsciously. That's the way I think it works, at least.

Games are one of the mediums that should be pushing for this, some have, but the majority usually tend to ride heavily on stereotypes. One being that every and all female characters must be hotter than hell to even make the cut. The must be sculpted perfection. In reality, we all know this to not be the case. Not that these people don't exist or have the possibility of not existing, but a majority, not all, a majority of female characters follow this stereotype. They also tend to lack clothing or have ensembles that defy physics to show off their assets. As a man, I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but it gets old. I think this is a step in the right direction. I think the one on the left is still clearly a female, and somewhat easy on the eyes, but still quite aggressive looking and won't hesitate to mess you up. I find the one on the right too...girly. I mean she's too innocent looking, playing that stereotype quite well, but I find the look out of place for this kind of game. Am I saying make all female characters flawed and ugly as sin? By far and large, no, what I am saying though is a little more variety. Hell, you can make a plain-Jane average- looking female character, and make her interesting, not from the astetics, but through storytelling, give something more to her than just a face. I don't feel any inadequacies or anything of the nature playing a female leading character in a game, nor a strong one. Heck, most, if not all RPGs, I play both male and female characters, like in Mass Effect and Fallout 3, I play a good male, then an evil female. It's just my thing. Though it is a subconcious/psychological thing, I'm sure that with a little effort, they can simply just get over it, because I honestly don't see what the big deal is unless it makes them feel inferior. My two cents, not directed towards anyone, just my own comments/observations.

Sideburnz: I was getting the same feeling as you but didn't express it correctly. What I think I meant to say is she has a more 'agressive' face, which definitely looks more the part. 'Man-like', as in a more square jaw. Lower the cheek bones just slightly, and you could easily build a male character around it. I think it appeals to men because, in that way (agressive/intimidating), you can empathize with her character - making it easier be immersed in the role. The one with the more round cheeks could just as easily be "Faith", as the roles played in life usually don't take looks into consideration. But you can't tell me you would find it just as easy to empathise with the girl on the right - to "be" her. Women might like the actual character more because it appeals to their 'tough' side, in the same way as it does guys. But it's even more empowering for women because they're stereotyped as the weaker sex. I don't really know; it's just an idea. Oh yeah, the link above will take you to scans of the first review. 9/10. |

With the two versions side by side, yeah, I could easily and securely, of course, play as either and still immerse myself into the game, but like you mentioned, as well as what I said above, the in-game character does accent the "tough" side of women, which is quite evident. Precisely, that was the point I was making. Far too often I see women in games portrayed, much like movies, as objects rather than people, whether they be for desire or otherwise. I'm a guy, and I find it offensive at times. Hopefully this will help kickstart a popular trend of great games with strong, female leading characters. They're far and few in between at the current.

About the 2D trailers, what animation software or program do they use?

I wouldn't care what they used, they are the only thing bad about the game itself.

I have seen another review of mirrors edge and it wasn't so favourable. Or rather, the feeling was mixed and felt that it had potential but didn't quite live up to it completely.
One of the main aspects they felt was the tired and predictable story. Second was the close quarter aspect itself. Unless you use the slowmo feature its neigh impossible to disarm someone and frequently ends with death in most cases. But then, you're playing it completely wrong if you intended to beat everyone. But if the mechanics are iffy, then maybe there might be a case third The action itself is questionable. Apparently some people found it fantastic, others found it jarring and difficult to maintain. I suppose in this game you have to look ahead and think ahead to win. fourth no multiplayer to speak of. Yeah, i was miffed by this one too. Why would i want to race with someone when i can race against a simulation by someone? Thats more then adequate surely? Fifth game is short. 5 hours or something on normal. me? I'm going to wait and see what everyone else thinks.

I'll rent it, beat it twice, and if it's worth another playthrough I'll just dl it for PC when it gets released (for cheaper)
