Default Epic Summer Contest Rules

Epic Summer Contest Rules

Theme:

Epic

Noun: A literary or dramatic composition that resembles an extended narrative poem celebrating heroic feats.

Adjective: Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size.

This contest will test your skills for taking a narrative and turning it into an epic masterpiece. Like in the movie industry where the director will give you an idea of what he or she wants, it will be up to you to turn the written description into a visual version. Being dramatic with your visuals is the key for an epic piece of art, make sure you hold nothing back in terms of mood, atmosphere, and storytelling. The hero(s) must contrast with the environment to exagerate what they are up against.

You will be able to choose from one (or more) of the following snippets to work from:

Quote:
Space Battle
The Hero's fighter flies towards the gigantic Mother Ship. Hundreds of Alien Attackers flow in and out of the Mother Ship through the many triangular portals. Guided missiles from the Hero's fighter explode as they hit the Mother Ship damaging the outer hull. The Alien Attackers go after the other fighters. An aerial dog fight ensues with the Hero causing most of the damage.
Quote:
Demon Battle
Emergency lighting snaps on throwing the room into a strobing nightmare of action. Flashes of human skin melting reveals snippets of the true demons underneath. It's total pandemonium as their rage is directed toward the only real humans in the room. Our two heroes fling their coats open, draw their weapons, and start firing away. Sacred bullets cause major damage wounds that ripple out through the demon bodies.
Quote:
Military Battle
In the distance and along the horizon, the fleet is being decimated in the blinding explosions of dust and debris. It is a stark contrast to the otherwise beautiful landscape of majestic waterfalls, tall cliffs, and rolling hills. The last fortifications are crumbling as the seemingly unstoppable enemy advances like a rolling juggernaut. But up here there is no sound of battle. The dark lord calmly turns to our hero.
Quote:
Underwater Environment
As we look down, past the hero's aquatic suit to a ghostly landscape. The last flare sputters out, but there is still light. Bioluminescent algae carpet the walls of the canyon below. It is beautiful; the water is so clear we can see down 500 feet past the tiny, silhouetted figure, to a vast landscape faintly revealed in spectral pastels. Barren as the moon but exquisite, serene. Changeless. A place unseen by human eyes.
Quote:
Great Hall Environment
Our hero enters the area but is awed by what is seen. This once-great hall lies in ruin. Light enters the hall through holes in the 40-foot-high roof, and choking clouds of dust fill the air. Two chipped statues standing against one partially collapsed wall depict somber kings clad in armor. Two half-fiend ogres scour the keep for treasure. They and the orcs accompanying them are supposed to be scouting the ruins as a possible staging area for future raids into civilized lands, but they have become distracted by the environment.
Quote:
Battle Aftermath
The Keep of Fallen Kings fell centuries ago in battle, and her stones and surroundings are now a field of skulls, sundered weapons, broken siege engines, and detritus. The Old Kings were cruel men who ruled their lands with fear. When the armies of their neighbors attacked the keep and finally slew the last of the tyrant kings, they left the cursed place to rot. Our hero found the Keep of Fallen Kings inhabited by orcs, ogres, and giants. A long and vicious battle ensued, and although the hero emerged triumphant, most of the hired followers were slain in the altercation, and several more fled while the hero obliterated friend and foe alike with indiscriminate fireballs. The atmosphere is thick, the few that are left stand alone in what seems like the end of the world.
Requirements

ˇThe hero(s) can be either male, female, or not even human.

ˇYou will be working alone for this contest; no teams.

ˇYou may do more than one, but they will be judged as separate submissions and you may only have one in the top three.

ˇEntries may be in any media: pencil, ink, computer graphics, paint, etc... However, the file size must not exceed 400kb size limit.

ˇModerators reserve the right to disqualify any entry if it does not meet the theme requirements and/or if it violates any of the rules.

I hope so.

This contest was the hardest one to work out. Everyone should submit something or else...

I've read the descriptions for each of the pictures and I have a question. Do all the details given in the excerpt have to be present in the composition or can we select some details and play around with them?

Anyways, that one about the Great Hall seems to be most appealing to me . I hope to enter this time

You don't have to be perfect but you should follow what's given.

Quote:

Think of this as a professional job. Give [them] what they're asking for, in this case the one you choose, but of course it will be through your eyes and vision.

Does that answer your question?

This is good. You've given specifics, but there's also room for interpretation. I might actually give this a serious go.

I haven't posted anything in a bit, and my art has been sort of lackluster lately, but you have caught my interest, defnitely. In books, I look for Epic...in movies, Epic...in everything..Epic. Nice job on this contest, I am DEFINITELY gonna give it my all.

Ahh, I wondered when the next contest was... Looks like it's going to be an epic event . Hopefully I can conjure something up.

*EDIT* Is there a size limit on pictures?

:( contest always pop up when I've found myself a workload. I'd love to get in on this contest but alas I probably won't have time. I think I'll copy and paste the descriptions though for use in the future, I'd love to have a bash at some of these.

This sounds awesome! I was not aware of any contests like this... SWEET!

I am confused though about the requirements:

Q #1) How many pages are required for an epic sequential comic?

Q #2) Is there a preferred finishing / finalizing technique? Inking, Colour, Tones, etc...?

Q #3) Also, I am unsure how other than nudity, a comic could be any more than PG-13... I am not trying to sound stupid, but how many Orc deaths does it take to count as extreme violence? That is a real question.

...I am just asking, because I think this could be fun and a good exercise, but I do not want to be disqualified for not meeting requirements.

Oh...

Same as the previous contests; 400 kb maximum file size.

Quote:

As far as I understand it, the idea is to produce a single scene that is epic in nature, i.e. no sequentials. But as long sas the other mods dont care, feel free to do as many pages as you want, but the sum size per work should be less than 400kb.

Quote:

no, whatever you think will convey the epic feeling best.

Quote:

nudity does not always equal porn. And deaths do not always equal extreme violence. Explicit scenes of orcs raping the mutilated torsos of dead children will be thrown out.

plus that doesnt really fit with any of the descriptions.
