Default Game Design tips.

I hope you guys don't mind me starting this thread about tips.

First I want to say. This info comes from a game designer from Zombie Studios. And some time ago he sent me some very helpful information and I would like to share it. Some of it you've probably heard before. But some of you may not of. Regardless its still helpful. This is coming direct from him.

Quote:
A few things I tell everyone. it doesn't matter where you go to college (or if you go at all) its all about you skills and presentation. Also the old saying "its not what you know, its who you know" is 100% true.

If I had to start all over I don't think I would or could have done it better. I also wanted to be a lead designer, but my good friend that was in games told me the hard truth. Each game only hires 1 lead designer and they never would hire anyone without a game under their belt. So I became an artist and spent the next 7 years working my way around to my current position and studio. This isn't my end goal as well. Always have a moving target to keep something to try to get. But, keep it in baby steps.

A few ideas-

I would say first step is figure that first step. School or just try to break in to a studio in an entry level job. School could get you a degree, but that won't get you a job.. We turn down grads all the time.

Find out about game studios in you area and try to become a tester, could break you in.

Finding a group of like minded people that want to make a game, and make a mod. Mod devs are a found less now days. Because they get hire to make real games so fast.
So, would you guys be interested about any more info that comes my way on breaking in and other tips/suggestions?

Be a little bit arrogant and over confident in job interviews.
