Recently signed up for New Master's Academy. For my first week, I'm doing upper arm studies after Glenn Vilppu.
Good stuff. You should check them out.

Ah, I love watching Vilppu draw! He's great. You've done a really good job on those, keep it up!

Thanks! And yeah, Vilppu is the man. Gonna watch some more of his videos, then move onto Steve Huston.

Just playing around with styles. I still want to do my comic, but I need to find a style to stick to. More to come!

Sweet improvement Joe I would suggest for you to explore muting and accentuating the saturation/brightness of your colors according to where you want to viewers to focus on, because in general your saturation is all across the picture and sometimes it makes people look where you don't want them to. Your gestures and anatomy is definitely improving though, keep praccing

More work from NMA, more Vilppu. Expressions, this time.
The ones on the right are from a model, about 30-45 seconds each. The best way I can explain it is to capture the expression quick and loose, almost like the gesture of the face. You can always go back and refine it later.

Still working with different styles and approaches, this time trying to marry Marko Djurdjevic and Matt Rhodes’ approaches.
Character belongs to Marko Djurdjevic.

Hey Joe, really digging the last warrior dude. Cool studies too. Have you ever experimented with starting the face as a box instead of a sphere? Spheres can be quite difficult to understand sometimes, and a box is a much simpler shape.

Hey, man, nice to see you again.
I have tried to use a box as the head, but it feels less intuitive to me. I know a sphere is harder to place in perspective than a box, but the sphere feels more natural, more rhythmic.

Me: "What should I study today? Anatomy? Drapery? Maybe a master study?"
Brain: "How about Kazuya from Tekken, from a weird angle with some crazy perspective?"
Me: "ok lol"

Hmm, watch the lighting on the folds of the pants. Rim lighting isn't even, and the thickness of the rim light is a big visual clue to the curvature of the surface its on. Also the light on the front foot doesn't really make sense and it draws attention away anyways. Nice work on the chest, nice and defined muscle definition.

Also as an aside, it's so rare to see someone draw armpit hair.

Thanks for the critique.
I tend to zoom in on one spot and then forget about the rest of the piece. I'm working on that.
I agree with you about the armpit hair. Not sure why it's a taboo thing to depict, since it's just part of the anatomy.

Guys, I’ve created a Tumblr page specifically for the comic. I’ve been really working on it for about a year, and I think I finally have a good idea of what I’m doing with it.
Right now, there’s only the Kanú Tamú painting I did, but expect to see some more pages going up soon!

For the first, seems good so far. The 2nd frame is noticeably curved, you should probably fix that.

For typography, you generally want a bit more space between the text and frame, right now it feels really cramped. In fact, it might be better to use narrow but longer text box. They don't have to be a subtitle bar underneath the picture.

Also, you need to pick a better font to fit the style of your comic. Especially since this looks like a narration via engraving, maybe something like this:

or

http://www.blambot.com/font_caeldera.shtml

or just pick something you like from here: http://www.blambot.com/fonts_design.shtml

Use all caps too, that seems to be the standard for both manga and comics

Hey, brother, thank you very much for the pointers.
The frame is all wonky cause I was trying to emulate old medieval religious paintings, so I tried it free handed, and I left all the imperfections in. I started using shift to draw straight lines later cuz it's faster, so yeah, I do need to go back and fix that.
I went back and fixed the text, though, so hopefully it's a little less cramped. Does it look better now?
I want to keep the current font for the prologue only. The comic itself will have different font. I was totally not going to use all caps, so thanks for the heads up on that.

Done with the prologue. I went back and sorta fixed the border on the second frame, and changed the font a bit so it's not too cramped.

Some more NMA goodness. 1-point perspective studies with Sheldon Borenstein.
