Default Cheap way to make backgrounds for your comix (with PS) ;p

Basically...this is a quick tutorial about turning a real picture to a background "pencil-like" drawn piece (with Photoshop) for lazy ppol :o (comic h4x) (I don't really use this method though, I still draw BG's the long way but this effect is really, really nice )
Just look up for a picture online of a structure. This is what I found (sorry bout the big size, but you can use this picture through this tutorial):

1. Open the image with Photoshop.

2. Desaturate it (Image>Adjustments>Desaturate)(makes it a black and white image if it is colored)

3. Duplicate the Background to another copy (right-click the layer the original picture was and left-click "Duplicate Layer"). Name it whatever and click OK.

4. Selecting the copied layer (which is on top of the original layer), Invert the copy (Image>Adjustments>Invert)

5. Change the Blending option of the copied layer to "Color Dodge" (It is located on the Layers Window). You will get a mostly white image.

6. Still selecting the copied layer, use a Gaussian Blur Filter (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur)

7. Just scroll the Radius bar on the bottom until the picture looks pencil-like (mostly around 10 pixels of radius or less)

8. We can stop here, but we can also make it looked toned and shaded a little. Go to Levels (Click Ctrl + L or go to Image>Adjustments>Levels)

9. On the Levels Window, move the grey button tab a little to the right until the tones looks just 'right'

Here is the final product:

I believe that some comics and manga uses a similar technique like this (like some in Ai Yazawa's city backgrounds in Paradise Kiss and Nana ;p )

Wow this is strange. I was trying to figure out a good way to do that the other week with the same picture. Did you just google building?

This is also a much better way than how I did it.

Hurrah, now my future comics can actually look decent. Plus be based on an exsisting location. Now photos of the white house and we can make an action comic.

Hehe, what a coincidence ;p
Yep, this is the 2nd hit I got in google while searching under Images for "building".

Better yet, if you live in a city, walk around and take pictures of buildings you like. Copley Square in Boston is a nice bet. Especially in the summer, with the farmer's market.

I've done a similar thing to that in backgrounds... I've made a tutorial before for PSP8. Thing is. I tend to edit out things that aren't supposed to be there, like people, and stuff like that. Sometimes I just smack something else over it. Like if It's a city scene, manipulate it, then smack drawn people over the real images of people and stuff like that.
But a lot of the time I draw my own.
