Been doing some more sculpting:

And some more painting:

Been a bit burnt out on digital recently, I'll probably get back to it in a bit.

So... Substance Painter 2 was in the latest Steam Summer Sale, and since I occasionally dabble in 3d, and texturing is a pain in Photoshop, I decided to get it. Made a quick model to convince myself that I could actually build and texture a model all by myself.

Normal mapping extreme low poly models is a weird feeling. It's like... buying a kid's coloring book, and then trying to make it into a masterpiece with Prismacolors and lighting reference. Silk purse out of a sow's ear and all that. Except it actually kind of works.

130 poly / 254 tri. Probably could have shaved off a few more if I'd really tried.

Ugh.

No time to draw at all these days, which sucks.

And trying to make something good after a long hiatus is like trying to pull all of the cheese out of a mozzarella stick.

Crown and sword not finished, but otherwise what I've been working on.

Detail cut-in:

...but why would you get the cheese out, tho

I really like the dress. I like how elegant, yet simple, it looks. I also really like the semi transparent shawl.
I think maybe her hairline goes too high up on her head.
Keep it going.

I really need to work on backgrounds that aren't snow, forests, or open water. At least I'm taking muzz's advice on perspective (although I think I screwed it up some. Ah well, better luck next time)

Hey man I think the perspective is working well. However the values look a little flattened out, I think you can give your stuff in general more depth by making the planes turn a bit more and defining the side planes a bit more. Did a quick paintover to show you what I mean.

I think you're doing great. Would love to see you experiment more with atmospheric/colored lighting... :9

Thanks ast!

Anyways...

3 hour speedpaint thing.

Maybe I should have used a 3d model guide. Also definitely should have gotten color in much sooner, they feel kinda awful at this point.

Also not quite cramped enough for a tank interior I think. Figures should all be bigger.

Still, I'm somewhat satisfied. Now time to sleep, it's 5am in the morning here.

I'm really digging that first one of the bayonet, however I think some sharper edges on the cloth would work better.

Man, your rendering is getting really good. I like how you tried a much softer approach on the woman in the red dress

Thanks, lamb, joe!

@ast: Atmospheric / colored lighting? Starting from a pure colored thumb seems to help a lot.

Oh wow those thumbs are really good. I need to practice it myself as most of my thumbs are just masses of lines and have absolutely no detail and practically useless to me.

Something Waterhouse-inspired. This one probably makes the cut for escalation to full painting.

I really like the juxtaposition of the brightly lit figure with the dark background.
Though I will say, just because some watery tart throws a sword at you...

So uh, I impulse-bought my very own 1907 bayonet because it's a really long knife that I can kind of pretend is a short sword, among other reasons. But it didn't come with a scabbard (because that'd be another 30 bucks at least). Also IT'S REFERENCE.

Welp, time to make my own.

Curly yellow birch and cocobolo, and I replaced the old oak grips (black from who knows how many coats of linseed oil and grime) with more cocobolo.

Also a bit more done on the painting, which I'll be getting back to now that my little woodworking interlude is over.

The underwater one looks really good.

The current WIP is great too, although I think I liked the wing more in the initial shot. The shape seemed a better fit for the composition. Did you purposely place the sword at that angle to block out her nipples?

No, as a matter of fact that was completely accidental.

So little time to paint these days...

Your facial structure doesn't really work. You made her have a really strong jawline but it doesn't show up at all on the other side. Her nose seems be angled towards the camera compared to the rest of the face. Overall her features seem elongated, I tried to keep everything in the same location and her face just feels a bit too long. Also, push your values, especially since your lighting looks like its off to the side.

On one hand, yes, need to push contrast. Also agreed on the jawline.

On the other, the large changes in facial structure you made make her look kind of like an Angelina Jolie caricature...

More work on the Waterhouse painting. Unfortunately with the way the lighting is set up, I don't think I can do much interesting other than simple vignetting. Next painting focus on dramatic lighting I suppose.

And some meh character doodles when I was bored.
