Default Rpg game Peeping Tom - Urban Adventure

So I'm making this game, and I wanted to some how share it with the people of PK.

Its an adventure rpg where you play as a only child boy who recently got expelled from high school. There is an emphasis on your mother who is your only parent. Her heart was broken when she found out her only son, the only thing good in her life, was taking pictures of girls in the womens change room.
Your mom casts you out into the world until dinner time.
Along your journey you meet weird and wacky people.

I wont reveal too much info now, just look at the pictures.


Now, im makin this in a shitty ass program called game maker. Its not very powerful and not designed for 3D, but its still capable of low poly renderings. I would have picked a different program, but i love the look of old school games on the 64(i have my reasons).
some of these models might end up to be too many polys, which you might find rediculous.

to be clear, i want to be a texture artist, not a modeler so keep that in mind also.

I have over 40 objects modeled and fully textured. I'll be taking screens and posting the texture art if it gets to the point.

I'm currently working on characters. I'm almost done a main NPC which ill post when the time comes.

Umm... Models and textures have to work very well together. You can have a good model that has bad textures and it to be 'acceptable', but if you have amazing textures and poor models its hard to really rate the quality of the texture. I would suggest to find a good modeler to work on the models and you do the textures for him. The textures do look very good for the limits you are working with.

Why dont you try to make a stylized 2d game instead?

But if you want to keep it this way I would suggest looking at Blizzards work. They tend to have low detailed models with very stylized textures.

the game was originally in 2d, i was making it in 3ds max with high poly models, but i found a 3d programmer and never looked back!

So, I was doing the game in game maker up until a few days ago when I got a hold of this other game making software, DarkBasic Pro.
the best thing is I can make better models with it!!!!

I was tired of programmers not doing their damn job!!!
...Now I'm making the game.

I can even post screenshots now!
I'll be working away importing objects, creating environments, making an engine, and possibly getting my best friend (who is really good at programming) to help!


I've taken the advice of one karbonite and have shifted the artistic direction
as shown here.

Even though it was probably to be expected the random naked girl geeked me out.

You could always go the lazy/cheap route and get your models from Google's 3D warehouse and then export and re-texture them. You can find free models for just about anything than range from crappy to quite good (considering the software). They seem to have the look that I think you may be going for.

Examples-
camera; stove; washing machine; sofa

The thing is they almost never have custom textures. They are usually either solid colors, the crappy textures that come with the software, or actual photo textures overlaid onto the model. Some good texturing could turn many of them into great models.

BTW I'm not sure which format you use but Sketchup pro can export models in these formats-

Been working on the engine, its all going very well and rather quickly.

camera mode
3rd person mode
some things i have implemented into the game :
sneak,run, walk
camera mode with zoom
3rd person camera
collision
title menu
pause/ item inventory/ stats screen
Working models and animations
Some GUI
almost got joystick compatibility

im got a lot to do, ive got to start on AI to continue with programming the core engine, to do that I want some models to animate which im currently working on

i have a lot of old models I made prior to using game maker that I will most likely be using now.

Ah good ol dark basic.

Tis great for throwing a game together, but be warned it is difficult to make something really polished with it. That being said i have heard it is a good starting point. Nice and cheap as well.

My game team is using it for play test prototypes at college /

Keep up the good work dood .

Could i see the 3d grrl up close so i can see the topology?

Shaded wires on a white bg D:.

Its pretty good, but there are some flaws in your modeling, but im sure you would have fixed up some of this anyway.
The biggest being the amount of detail around the neck, compared to the detail levels around the hips. A good mesh is a consistent mesh. Also a good tip is to have most of your detail on the limbs facing outwards. You don't see under arms often so why waste the polies there.

The knees are also kinda high, and that will be frustrating when you start to animate her. (oh and have fun trying to export animations to dark basic, i know the db coders at college love it....)

N64 graphics FTW!!

I know it's from your first post in this thread lol, but I felt I related on that point lol.

As for the latest model, it's looking good. I don't know if your still working on it, other than the head, or if you intend it to look that way, but I kind of like the 3D look where the character models are all smooth and don't have a very realistic texture to them. I know that's kind of weird in the way I explained it, and it's probably weird that I like that look. To me it's kind of refreshing in a way, like a look back in to the past before 3D artists started stressing the look of realism in everything they did.

The latest model is a work in progress.
Crits are very welcomed
You should look at 3d ds or psp games. Low poly is making a comeback for a lot of hand held systems. ... i love it.

I think it looks good man. i would rethink the wrist maybe. looks unnatural. arm and hand are never perfectly straight connected. there's like a wedge connection. then again it might not matter as the characters will probably be moving more than they would be standing relaxed.

just throw a head on dat ho!
